Voilà plus d'une heure qu'ils avançaient sur le sol rocailleux et étendu et certains hommes ahanaient. D'autres avaient déjà les pieds en feu, car le terrain parfois escarpé les recevait inconfortablement, alors qu'ils portaient des souliers inappropriés. En tout cas, malgré l'inconfort, personne ne le criait haut et fort. Résignés, ils acceptaient en silence leur malchance, mais étaient heureux d'être encore en vie. Le temps semblait trop lent et le désert immense s'ouvrait continuellement sous leurs pieds comme si chaque pas avancé faisait reculer au plus loin le vaste horizon.
On avait l'impression de stagner tellement tout se ressemblait sous cette clarté blafarde empreinte de nuit de mascarade. Oui, celle-ci était unique en son genre en ce sens qu'elle prenait au jour un peu de lueurs pour lui jouer un amusant tour à la première heure. Il ne trouvera à balayer de la nuit que sa robe légère qu'il offrira, désolé, à un soleil fou et conquérant. Vers trois heures du matin, le pas était devenu trop lourd.
On trainait derrière Afid qui peinait à marcher lui aussi, mais tenait bon, car dans sa tête trônait une merveilleuse idée. -- Je n'en peux plus, mes amis?! J'ai soif et suis fatigué. C'était le jeune écossais qui s'était entretemps immobilisé. -- Nous sommes tous dans ton cas, lui répondirent les hommes en chour. -- Soit?! Arrêtons-nous un moment?! ordonna Afid compatissant. Le petit cercle se forma autour de lui sauf Akim qui avait préféré rester légèrement en retrait.
Celui-ci semblait très contrarié. Il regrettait d'être venu avec ces étrangers qui ne lui disaient rien qui vaille. Depuis qu'ils avaient quitté la cité, il n'avait cessé de se poser des questions. Et si les terroristes, ayant découvert leur incartade, s'étaient mis à leur poursuite?? Ou bien ayant tout prévu, ils avaient des groupes déjà embusqués?? Tout était possible et la situation ne présageait rien de bon?! Afid ne s'en était nullement offusqué.
Commençant à bien le cerner, il ne lui attachait plus d'importance. Ce genre d'individus, versatiles à souhait, étaient capables du pire?;il ne fallait pas attendre d'eux un meilleur retour. Abordant une mine de façade, leurs paroles teintées pour chaque circonstance n'expriment jamais le fond de leur pensée. Hypocrites jusqu'à la moelle épinière, ils sont toujours à éviter, sinon les avoir à l'oil et ne jamais compter sur leur disponibilité.
Et comme dit le sage poète : « ?Tu as beau cacher ton jeu et tes idées, le monde saura découvrir ton vrai visage? ». -- Allez, debout les gars?! Nous devons continuer, lança Afid à ses coéquipiers. La petite équipe se remit doucement en mouvement. Il faisait déjà moins clair, car les flammes s'étant quelque peu estompées ne jetaient plus comme tantôt leur halo affolant et affolé. L'on ne voyait qu'une certaine lueur parfois rougeâtre persister à l'horizon sur un ciel retrouvant un peu de sa sérénité.
Les hommes ignoraient que de l'autre côté et suite à l'explosion, les sapeurs-pompiers bravant risque et danger s'employaient à éteindre l'incendie. -- Chut?! J'entends une clameur venir dans notre direction, commanda Afid à ses compagnons qui cessèrent tout mouvement. Les bruits s'intensifièrent. C'était ceux de pas lourds et de voix confuses et lointaines pour être distinctes. Afid pria ses camarades de se terrer et de ne plus bouger. Quelques instants passèrent. Là-bas, à l'affût d'un monticule, des silhouettes se détachèrent.
Les ombres semblaient se déplacer péniblement. Leurs paroles parvenaient maintenant, bien claires. On parlait purement algérien. -- Sapristi?! Ils viennent carrément sur nous?! Qu'allons-nous devenir?? Que vont-ils nous faire?? demanda Akim du fond de sa frayeur. -- Cesse de divaguer?! Tu vas finir par les alerter sur notre présence ici, lui fit remarquer Afid avec nervosité. Les expatriés que la panique avait regagnés étaient transis de peur.
